Words made famous by the Rolling Stones whose meaning is considerably different than my interpretation of this well -known lyric. Over and over I read and hear about people who are struggling to get satisfaction in their lives. Despite the gross national income rising over the last 50 years, the levels of happiness, aka life satisfaction, have not risen in alignment. A recent Harris Poll says that 1 out 3 Americans report a positive level of happiness. Martin Seligman in his book “Flourish” states that happiness levels have only “spottily” risen over the last half century. He and other positive psychologists have given those of us interested in this field, an accessible formula for increasing our levels of satisfaction, happiness and well-being.
To step off ( or maybe jump off) the hedonic treadmill, that never ending stress filled scurry to get more, want more, purchase more, we would be smart to invite eudemonia into our lives. That is, activities that are sustaining, that take us into that sweet place of richness in our lives through positive relationships, meaningful work or volunteer opportunities, experiences that are in accordance with our strengths, our true nature, our gifts, talents and very importantly our values.
It’s an absolutely beautiful time of year, with birds tweeting, flowers blooming, temperatures that welcome our bodies and souls to experience moments in the great outdoors. Being in nature, being with people you care about, doing something different and new, are all ways to connect you to more long lasting positive feelings. Spring is also, metaphorically speaking, an optimal time for growth. A time to reflect on what new seeds and plantings you want in your life and make a plan for how you will encourage and nurture an existing or new area of interest.
I invite you to take some time for yourself, whether it’s through journaling, digging in your garden for inspiration, enjoying a quiet walk in a forest or by a lake or the ocean, talking with a friend or coach, attending a retreat or conference and BLOOM into all you are called to be. I believe that each of us can contribute to raising the levels of satisfaction. Step into the Rich life you desire and deserve. It’s full of satisfaction.
